MANATEE -- JR Kyllonen's life just got a bit busier.
Like many, the 27-year-old North Sarasota man is bracing for the start of professional football season, which opens Wednesday.
But for Kyllonen, that means more than just huddling around the TV screen.
He already has begun monitoring player contract holdouts that could linger well into the season. He's tracking injuries for all 32 teams. He has an eye on the sports pages constantly, scouting potential no-namers who could make a mark this year.
Kyllonen is one of 27 million people in the United States and Canada who play fantasy football. It's a way of life.
"The best part is having bragging rights when you win," he said. "I enjoy the friendly rivalry."
As fantasy football explodes across working America, more laborers are taking time from their daily routine to keep up with an online game that can become an all-consuming passion from September through year's end.
Some employers are worried that passion is reducing employee productivity -- especially for office workers with constant access to computers and smart phones. Others see it as a morale booster.
Fantasy football, which involves drafting and fielding a virtual team of NFL players to out-score opposing teams, has mushroomed since its roots in 1963.
Kyllonen has been playing the popular online strategy game with friends since high school, reaching the league Super Bowl once but never taking home the big prize.
He keeps tabs of his team throughout the day on his Android, checking during lunch and every break while working at American Torch Tip Co. in Bradenton. But he vows not to let the hobby impact his job performance.
Others around the country can't say the same thing.
An estimated 13.6 million Americans openly admit they play fantasy football at work, even if it means finishing one less report or skipping a few client calls.
Now there are TV and radio broadcasts that solely focus on fantasy football. So-called expert subscriber services are making millions of dollars just from selling tips. And players are putting up big money to join a league, sometimes several. Players can spend anywhere from a modest $20 to several thousand.
Human resources specialists say
all that distraction can put a strain on worker productivity.
But as long as the office culture is controlled, most gamers know their limits, said Katie Loehrke, human resources editor for J.J. Keller and Associates Inc., a compliance resource firm that's been analyzing the impact of fantasy football.
"It can be a problem if employees let it get out of control," Loehrke said. "But in a lot of places, it's no different than the daily banter of what was on TV the night before."
Fantasy football players spend an estimated nine hours each week managing their teams, including an average of 10 minutes during the work day on team-related duties.
Those habits equal a lost productivity price tag calculated at $7.4 billion for a 17-week fantasy league season, according to J.J. Keller and Associates.
The amount of time an employee might spend researching injury reports and player match ups to craft a winning lineup can be curbed through a strict Internet policy, Loehrke said.
Still, some employees can work around the issue by using a smart phone to fine tune their strategy.
But it's not all bad.
If employees seem to huddle up for a few minutes to compare injury reports and roster moves, fantasy football can be a good way to encourage team-building -- also opening a safe avenue for small talk.
"Anytime you find something people have in common it can build morale," Loehrke said. "Fantasy football is that. It can really bring people together."
One thing is for sure, fantasy football seems to be here to stay.
If nothing else, if gives fans another reason to tune into the sport they love -- even if it means ditching a conference call to replace an ailing running back.
"Especially with your friends and people you know, it's a good way to keep in touch no matter where you live," said area resident Julian Daucourt, who's in two leagues. "The trash talking is always fun, and if you can make a little money, even better."

(US clinical medical negligence law and general information applicable in the UK) You went to the doctor seeking competent, compassionate medical treatment. What you received, however, may have been the opposite. From misdiagnosing illnesses and prescribing the wrong medications to horrendous mistakes that never should have occurred, medical negligence can and does occur. If you feel as though a healthcare provider treated you negligently, you may want to pursue a clinical negligence claim.
Before you start, consider this: Did the provider?s actions or lack of action cause serious harm? Doctors, nurses, and other healthcare providers make mistakes, many of which are promptly caught and corrected before the errors erupt into bigger problems. In other words, if you went in for a flu shot and received a pneumonia shot in error and nothing came of it, you likely don?t have a legitimate clinical negligence claim. On the other hand, if the mistaken injection caused you to have a life-threatening allergic reaction that put you in the hospital for weeks, you may have good reason to seek compensation under a clinical or medical negligence claim.
While you certainly don?t need to know the specifics of the law (unless you opt to pursue the claim without the benefit of legal counsel), any casual research you do should consider the governing law where you will be filing the claim. Clinical negligence, medical negligence, and medical malpractice laws vary from one country to the next. For example, in the United Kingdom, Civil Procedure Rules apply to clinical negligence claims in England and Wales. These rules include a provision dictating that doctors serving as expert witnesses must remain impartial. However, these rules do not apply to Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Even within a country, the laws can vary from one state or province to the next. For example, according to a malpractice report issued by the Kaiser Family Foundation, U.S. medical malpractice laws, which trace their roots to 19th Century English common law, have largely been established through decisions made in state courts. Legal precedents established in one state do not apply to other states, though many state laws share common traits. If you research clinical negligence before consulting with an attorney, focus on the laws that apply to your specific jurisdiction.
While there?s plenty to learn about clinical negligence, time is ticking. Most clinical negligence laws have a statute of limitations which specify the legally prescribed period in which a lawsuit can be filed.
No matter which laws govern your clinical negligence claim, you will need to prove that the healthcare provider?s negligence caused harm to you (or your loved one if the harmed patient is incapacitated or deceased). This burden of proof is on your shoulders, and a good medical negligence attorney is essential.
In general, you will need to prove:
? That a doctor-patient relationship existed or that the doctor had a duty of care to you
? That the doctor was negligent
? That you suffered harm as a result
Proving liability and causation is often difficult, making it vital to retain a clinical negligence attorney.
Most legal claims never make it to court. Even if your clinical negligence claim goes to trial, it may be settled out of court before the court date. Regardless, there will be plenty of forms to fill out and meetings and depositions to attend. Your attorney will handle the legal details, though you may need to be involved at some level.
Clinical negligence claims are difficult. However, if you have been harmed as a result of clinical negligence, pursuing a clinical negligence claim may be in your best interest (and the best interest of future patients). Are you ready to explore your legal options?

As each party does every four years as part of their national conventions, this week, the Republican Party adopted its platform detailing the general beliefs and policy positions of the party.
Included in the 2012 Republican platform is a strong statement of support for the individual right to keep and bear arms, which goes beyond a generic statement of support for the Second Amendment and includes specific statements on key issues of concern to gun owners.
Here is the text on the Second Amendment included in the platform:
The Second Amendment: Our Right to Keep and Bear Arms
We uphold the right of individuals to keep and bear arms, a right which antedated the Constitution and was solemnly confirmed by the Second Amendment. We acknowledge, support, and defend the law-abiding citizen's God-given right of self-defense. We call for the protection of such fundamental individual rights recognized in the Supreme Court's decisions in District of Columbia v. Heller and McDonald v. Chicago affirming that right, and we recognize the individual responsibility to safely use and store firearms. This also includes the right to obtain and store ammunition without registration. We support the fundamental right to self-defense wherever a law-abiding citizen has a legal right to be, and we support federal legislation that would expand the exercise of that right by allowing those with state-issued carry permits to carry firearms in any state that issues such permits to its own residents. Gun ownership is responsible citizenship, enabling Americans to defend their homes and communities. We condemn frivolous lawsuits against gun manufacturers and oppose federal licensing or registration of law-abiding gun owners. We oppose legislation that is intended to restrict our Second Amendment rights by limiting the capacity of clips or magazines or otherwise restoring the ill-considered Clinton gun ban. We condemn the reckless actions associated with the operation known as "Fast and Furious," conducted by the Department of Justice, which resulted in the murder of a U.S. Border Patrol Agent and others on both sides of the border. We applaud the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives in holding the current Administration's Attorney General in contempt of Congress for his refusal to cooperate with their investigation into that debacle. We oppose the improper collection of firearms sales information in the four southern border states, which was imposed without congressional authority.
The inclusion of specific issues, such as the right to self-defense, opposition to the semi-auto ban, and support for interstate Right-to-Carry reciprocity makes this the most pro-Second Amendment position ever included in a major party platform. The NRA commends the GOP for taking a strong and unambiguous stance in support of our fundamental, individual right to keep and bear arms.

ScienceDaily (Aug. 31, 2012) ? The speed at which we drink alcohol may be influenced by the shape of the glass we drink from, according to new research from the University of Bristol, published in PLoS ONE. This could be a target to help control the problematic levels of drunkenness that are becoming increasingly common in our society.
Dr Angela Attwood and colleagues from Bristol's School of Experimental Psychology recruited 160 social drinkers aged 18-40 with no history of alcoholism to attend two experimental sessions. At one session they were asked to drink either lager or a non-alcoholic soft drink from either a straight-sided glass or a curved 'beer flute'.
The participants were almost twice as slow when drinking alcohol from the straight-sided glass compared to the curved glass. There was no difference in drinking rates from the glasses when the drink was non-alcoholic.
The researchers suggest that the reason for this may be because it is more difficult to accurately judge the halfway point of shaped glasses. As a result, drinkers are less able to gauge how much they have consumed.
In order to test this, participants attended another session in which they completed a computer task that presented numerous pictures of the two glasses containing varying volumes of liquid. By asking participants to judge whether the glass was more or less than half full, the researchers were able to show that there was greater error in accurately judging the halfway point of the curved glass.
Importantly, the degree of this error seemed to be associated with the speed of drinking. That is, the participants who tended to show the greatest error in their halfway judgments tended to show the greatest changes in drinking rate.
The speed at which an alcoholic beverage is drunk will influence the level of intoxication experienced, and also the number of drinks consumed in a single drinking session. Therefore, slowing drinking rates is likely to have positive impact for the individual and also at a population level.
Dr Attwood said: "Due to the personal and societal harms associated with heavy bouts of drinking, there has been a lot of recent interest in alcohol control strategies. While many people drink alcohol responsibly, it is not difficult to have 'one too many' and become intoxicated. Because of the negative effects alcohol has on decision making and control of behaviour, this opens us up to a number of risks.
"People often talk of 'pacing themselves' when drinking alcohol as a means of controlling levels of drunkenness, and I think the important point to take from our research is that the ability to pace effectively may be compromised when drinking from certain types of glasses."
