Japan's Fujifilm calls for Swiss-style yen (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Fujifilm Holdings President Shigetaka Komori wants a Swiss-style cap on the yen to help Japanese firms, he said in an interview on Wednesday, adding his voice to a growing chorus of executives including Nissan's Carlos Ghosn.

Komori also said diversification helped protect Fujifilm from meeting the same fate as photographic film pioneer Eastman Kodak, which is preparing a Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in case it is unable to sell its digital patents to raise capital, a report said earlier this month.

Fujifilm, which diversified from the shriveling photographic film market into digital photography, printers and healthcare, in October cut its operating profit forecast for the financial year ending in March by 15 percent to 136.5 billion yen ($1.8 billion), blaming the strong yen and global economic uncertainty.

But Komori said that would amount to a record profit if calculated on the basis of 2007 exchange rates and materials prices.

"The government is showing weak leadership," he said. "We are asking the government to do something like Switzerland," Komori said, referring to the Swiss National Bank's cap on the franc at 1.20 per euro, introduced last September.

Japanese Finance Minister Jun Azumi, however, told reporters on Wednesday that it would be hard for Japan to set such an upper limit on its currency given the vast supply of yen in global markets.

"From the standpoint that the Japanese yen is basically the third key currency after the dollar and the euro, we cannot go as far as the Swiss have done," Azumi said.

Fujifilm's Komori sees 90 yen to the dollar as a fair exchange rate, compared with current rates of about 77 yen.

But he said Fujifilm could bear the current rates and that he currently had no plans to shift more production overseas.

Nissan's Ghosn said last November many projects were being moved outside Japan because businesses could not cope with current exchange rates. He called for a fixed exchange rate.

Komori lamented the fate of Kodak, with which it is currently engaged in a court battle over digital camera patents, as the U.S. firm also tries to sell its patent portfolio to secure enough funds to enable it to avoid bankruptcy.

"It's a shame. They used to be a strong rival," he said. "Kodak were not as well prepared as us for the digital era," he added.

Failure to develop a wide portfolio of businesses may also have weakened the U.S. company, whose name was once synonymous with photography, Komori said.

"Kodak said they just wanted to be a digital company. But that alone was not enough," he said, noting that Fujifilm has expanded into pharmaceuticals, medical and office equipment as well as films used in liquid-crystal display panels.

Nielsen: CBS dominates weekly TV ratings (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? CBS scored big in the weekly ratings with the National Football League's Patriots-Broncos playoff game and the network's reliable series lineup.

New England's lopsided win over Denver in the AFC divisional match on CBS was last week's most-watched broadcast with 34.2 million viewers, according to Nielsen Co. figures released Wednesday.

CBS also got a boost from the debut of the sitcom "Rob." The Rob Schneider series rode the coattails of "The Big Bang Theory" to draw 13.5 million viewers despite scathing reviews.

Fox, in a distant second place, had the No. 2 program with the NFC playoff game between the winning New York Giants and the Green Bay Packers. It drew 23.8 million viewers.

The Golden Globes proved the bright spot for fourth-place NBC. The awards show was watched by 16.85 million viewers, beating all network competition in its time slot but dipping slightly from last year's audience of 17 million.

CBS averaged 13.9 million viewers in prime time (8.3 rating, 13 share). Fox had 8.7 million (5.0, 8), ABC had 7 million (4.4, 7), NBC had 6.6 million (4.2, 7), the CW had 1.3 million (0.9, 1) and ION Television had 1.1 million (0.7, 1).

Among the Spanish-language networks, Univision led with a 3.4 million average (1.7, 3). Telemundo had 1.4 million (0.7, 1), TeleFutura had 620,000 (0.3, 0), Estrella had 220,000 and Azteca 170,000 (both 0.1, 0).

NBC's "Nightly News" topped the evening newscasts with an average of 9.3 million viewers (6.1, 11). ABC's "World News" was second with 8.3 million (5.5, 10) and the "CBS Evening News" had 7 million viewers (4.7, 8).

A ratings point represents 1,147,000 households, or 1 percent of the nation's estimated 114.7 million TV homes. The share is the percentage of in-use televisions tuned to a given show.

For the week of Jan. 9-15, the top 10 shows, their networks and viewerships: AFC Divisional Playoff: Denver at New England, CBS, 34.2 million; Fox NFC Playoff: NY Giants at Green Bay, 23.8 million; "NCIS," CBS, 21 million; Golden Globe Awards, NBC, 16.85 million; "NCIS: Los Angeles," CBS, 16.6 million; "The Big Bang Theory," CBS, 16.1 million; "Person of Interest," CBS, 14.9 million; "The Mentalist," CBS, 13.6 million; "Rob," CBS, 13.5 million, "Modern Family," ABC, 12.12 million.

Drowning Incidents Among Children Drop, Study Finds (LiveScience.com)

The rate of children hospitalized yearly due to drowning-related incidents has dropped by 50 percent since the early 1990s, a new report finds.

The biggest drop occurred in the southern U.S., where drowning-related incidents fell from seven yearly hospitalizations per 100,000 children to three annual hospitalizations?per 100,000 children.

"The report shows that we're doing a good job," said lead author Stephen Bowman, an epidemiologist and professor at the Johns Hopkins Center for Injury Research and Policy.

"Trends are going in the right direction, but there's still about 1,000 deaths from drowning in children per year," Bowman said. "And that's too many."

This is the first study to look at trends in hospitalizations for drowning incidents in children.

The study is published today (Jan. 16) in the journal Pediatrics.

Drowning highest among infants and toddlers

Every day in the U.S, about ten people die from accidental drowning. Of these, two are children 14 years old or younger, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death in children ages 1 to 19 in the U.S.

Among children, infants and toddlers are the highest risk group. In 2007, almost 30 percent of children who died from accidental injury?died from drowning.

Near drownings can cause brain damage, which can lead to long-term health complications such as memory problems, learning disabilities and permanent loss of basic functioning.

"Drowning is such a terrible, nasty injury because you're not getting enough oxygen," said Dr. Linda Quan, a pediatric emergency room physician at Seattle Children's Hospital.

"You can have a cardiac arrest, and with medical assistance, your heart might be able pump again," said Quan who was not involved with the work.

"But other organs including the brain may not be able to sustain such an injury," she said.

Which may explain how even after resuscitation, a person can still die after being hospitalized.

Are efforts to reduce accidental drownings enough?

Researchers looked at hospital data over a 16-year period and found the rates of hospitalization from drowning-related incidents declined in children younger than 19 years old.

From 1993 to 2008, researchers found, the number of hospitalizations associated with drowning decreased from about five cases per 100,000 children, to two cases.

Researchers also observed a 40 percent drop in bathtub-related drowning hospitalizations in infants and toddlers.

Study authors noted boys maintained higher rates of drowning injuries than girls.

The reason for the overall decline may be due to "educational campaigns that have been put into place to reduce drowning," Bowman said.

"Efforts such as putting fences around pools and encouraging parents to have kids in a supervised setting, are some of the things we'd like to believe are yielding positive results in reducing drowning," he said.

But Quan said she isn't entirely sure such efforts are the only reason for the decline.

"It could mean that kids aren't going to the beach as often," she said. "Or maybe they're just sitting at home playing computer games. We don't really know for sure why there's a decline." She said there hasn't been enough attention given to water safety.

"We haven't had national focus, medical focus or family focus on preventing drowning," Quan said. "We haven't taken the same approach to preventing drowning like we have with motor vehicle accidents."

What is most important is that parents follow all the necessary steps to ensure their child is safe, she said.

"Every family needs to think about how to prepare and respond to any water related activity," Quan said.

Some of her suggestions included:

  • Bring a lifejacket with you when visiting a beach.
  • Swim only where there's a lifeguard.
  • Keep active watch on your child if they're near or in the water.
  • Have your kids take swimming lessons.
  • Before engaging in a water-related activities, set expectations and rules with your kids.

Pass it on: Fewer kids require hospitalization from drowning.

IMF seeks up to $500 billion in new funds (AP)

BRUSSELS ? The International Monetary Fund said Wednesday that it's aiming to increase its financial firepower by around $500 billion so it can give out new loans to help ease a worsening financial crisis.

Responding to speculation surrounding its funding requirements, the Washington-based institution said its staff estimates that countries around the world will need about $1 trillion in loans over the coming years. Most of the concerns center on the 17 nations that use the euro and their debt crisis.

Thanks to about $200 billion that European countries have promised to the IMF, it's more than one-third of its way to reaching its fund-raising goal.

The IMF has put up about a third of the financing of the eurozone's bailouts over the past two years. But there are growing worries that non-European countries will also need more help because of the worsening economic outlook.

Earlier, its sister organization, the World Bank, urged emerging countries to be ready for a severe global downturn if the crisis in the 17-nation eurozone intensifies.

The eurozone, in particular, has been pushing countries around the globe to give more funds to the IMF. The idea is to build up a larger firewall to stop the continent's debt troubles from spreading to large economies like Spain, Italy or even France.

But so far, even countries relatively flush with cash as China or Brazil have been reluctant to put up more money for Europe. The United States is also reluctant to increase the fund's resources.

Eswar Prasad, a former top IMF official who teaches economics at Cornell University, said emerging market countries may have started to see the need for such support because Europe's debt crisis has begun to cut into their exports. He said also that concern about possible European bond defaults is triggering a flight to safer bonds. That means less capital is flowing to emerging markets.

"There is a sense among many countries that the problems of Europe are beginning to wash up on their shores so some action must be taken," Prasad said.

Prasad expects the issue to be discussed Thursday at a meeting of deputy finance ministers for Group of 20 countries in Mexico City. But he doesn't expect a decision until the G-20 finance ministers meet Feb. 24-25 in Mexico City.

Nor does Prasad expect the Obama administration to change its position. He expects it will continue to oppose further U.S. support to the IMF.

"The United States is almost certainly not going to put any more money on the table," Prasad said. "Even if the administration wanted to do it, there is little chance they could get it through Congress."

British Prime Minister David Cameron said Wednesday that the government would be prepared to back an increase but that he would require approval from his Parliament.

"We believe the IMF must always lend to countries, not to currencies," Cameron said at a news conference with Italian Premier Mario Monti. "We would only act if that was with others, not just as part of a eurozone measure.

But Cameron said it's up to the eurozone itself to prove that it's "standing behind its own currency."

Monti said British taxpayers wouldn't have to pay for Italy's economic woes.

"To my knowledge, my country has not cost a penny to the U.K.," Monti said. "I don't see a reason why this should change in the future."

How the IMF's fund-raising goal will be reached is set to be discussed at a meeting of finance ministers of the Group of 20 leading economies in Mexico next month.

NEW YORK (AP) ? A New Jersey woman got the morning commute of her life when she gave birth to her first child on a PATH commuter train to New York.

The 31-year-old woman, who lives in Harrison, N.J., said she had started feeling contraction-like pains but didn't think they were real because her baby wasn't due yet. She and her 30-year-old husband decided to travel into the city to have her checked out Monday.

They didn't want to drive and decided to take the train from Harrison into the city instead, thinking they could then take a taxi to Manhattan's Roosevelt Hospital, where her doctors are.

"It's just that this guy had other plans, and he came out earlier," the woman, holding her infant son in her arms, said from the hospital.

The Indian couple declined to give their names because they hadn't been able to notify their family in India of the birth. They also declined to reveal the boy's name and due date.

It was on the train ride that the woman started feeling her pains come more quickly, and she told her husband to check what was happening to her. He looked and saw that his son's head had already started to come out.

The husband said that with guidance from another woman on the train, he was able to deliver the baby around 10 a.m. Fellow riders offered encouragement, and the couple said one little girl offered her jacket to keep the baby warm.

PATH officials turned the train into an express, bypassing most stops so that it would get to its final stop, 33rd Street in midtown Manhattan, as soon as possible. Emergency services personnel met the train and took the family to the hospital.

The responding police officers said it wasn't unusual for women to give birth in facilities run by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, which operates the PATH and area transit hubs.

The biggest issue was the winter temperature, around 30 degrees outside, and making sure the baby was warm, Sgt. Mike Barry said.

"That's our biggest concern," he said. "We know that baby's body temperature is going to drop like a rock."

For one of the responding officers, delivering a baby in these circumstances was something familiar ? because it happened to him.

Officer Atiba Joseph-Cumberbatch said his son didn't want to wait, either, and came out early ? so Dad had to deliver him.

Jon Huntsman Drops Out Of Presidential Race

Former Obama ambassador failed to pick up momentum in race.

After a series of disappointing finishes and a failure to emerge from the pack, former Utah governor Jon Huntsman announced his withdrawal from the 2012 presidential race on Monday (January 16). Huntsman threw his support behind leading candidate Mitt Romney in a bid to unite a Republican party that is sorely divided over which candidate will take on President Obama in November.

"Our campaign for the presidency ends, but our campaign for a (better) American continues," Huntsman said during an official announcement in South Carolina during which he made a plea to the remaining candidates to stop launching attack ads on each other because "the current toxic form of our political discourse does not help our cause."

Huntsman served as ambassador to China in the Obama administration and was the sole voice of moderation amid a pack of White House contenders that have done their utmost to highlight their conservative bona fides. After skipping campaigning in Iowa
to focus all his energies on last week's New Hampshire primary, he came in a distant third to Romney and Ron Paul.

And though he put on a brave face and said his #3 finish in New Hampshire was a "ticket to ride" to the next contest in South Carolina on January 21, the reality of his anemic support base appears to have become clear to the man whose bid was launched on the promise of bringing civility back to the process. Almost from the start, Huntsman was unable to win over a Republican voting base that looked at his service in the current Democrat administration with scorn and blanched at his support on some social issues, including civil unions for gay couples.

In a campaign that struggled to pull polling numbers out of the single digits for most of the past year, one of the bright spots for Huntsman was the media embrace of his music-loving daughters'
social-networking prowess. Sisters Mary Anne, 26, Abby, 25, and Liddy, 24, helped focus some attention on their dad's often-overlooked campaign with their irreverent viral videos and tweets..

Speaking to MTV's Power of 12 last week in New Hampshire, the Huntsman trio said the grueling campaign was a "family affair"
that they were really enjoying. "We call it a roller coaster: You never know which way the car is going to go," said Abby on the eve of the Granite State contest when it looked like her dad's poll numbers were finally inching up into the solid double digits.

"We think [social media] is crucially important for this election cycle, especially for our younger generation, so we've kind of run with it," added Liddy, referring to such now-infamous bits as a YouTube send-up of former candidate Herman Cain's "smoking" commercial and a Justin Timberlake remake promoting their dad. Despite his pledge to endorse Romney, just last week Huntsman referred to the former Massachusetts governor as "unelectable."

With Huntsman — who, like Romney, was vying to be the nation's first Mormon president — out of the race, leading candidate Romney is now facing off against Paul, former Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum, former House speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Governor Rick Perry.

Solar Energy Trends For Future Investment Opportunities | Investing

The Solar Panel Process

Long before a solar panel (called a module in the industry), can be installed on a business or household rooftop, there are some steps that must take place. It all starts with plain ol? sand, from which silicon is extracted via various chemical processes. The refined and nearly pure silicon, called polysilicon or poly, is then heated and cast into cubes, called ingots. Cube-shaped ingots are then sawed into square wafers. Then the magic happens. The polysilicon wafers are then placed on a substrate, usually glass, to make a solar cell. A number of cells are then arranged together and set in place to form a panel. The final package is called a module. That?s how a solar panel is made in a nutshell. But hidden in those few steps are hundreds of companies, thousands of patents, and more than a few investment vehicles that can make those ?in the know? a lot of money.

For nearly a decade, the industry surged ahead with a compounded annual growth rate over 40%, and investors made a lot of money on the companies making it happen.

The solar market is still set to triple in size in the next five years. By 2015, installed solar capacity will grow another 347% to over 72 gigawatts as utilities worldwide are incentivized and forced to adopt sustainable production assets, and as solar energy reaches price parity in a growing number of markets. In order for those forecasts to hold true, improved policy is going to have to do battle with current economic conditions. The Current State of the Solar Market is currently facing rapidly falling prices, both for its raw material and its finished product. A seasonal dip in demand and the related oversupply of panels coupled with the general economic slowdown and restricted lending has led to an up to ~30% decrease in selling prices for solar modules. Of course, the operating costs of solar companies have not fallen as quickly, forcing companies to reduce profit margins as they sell discounted panels. In fact, in the recent price scramble, Chinese manufacturers have opened an advantage over historically dominant European companies. Established Chinese producers are currently offering contracted prices of about ?2.00 per watt, while European suppliers are struggling to break below ?2.50 per watt.

As such, Chinese solar companies are poised to gain some European market share. You should see that reflected in their share prices over the next few quarters. Even with the economy in the pits, the German solar market?the largest in the world?is still set for steady growth, thanks to renewed lending by German state bank KfW and national political commitment. Funding for rooftop and small ground installations is also flowing again from large European investment banks and local savings banks. Other countries in the European Union will take longer than Germany to heat their solar markets back up. Any astute investor should thus ensure that they have exposure to the German market, which is predicted to be one of the earliest to recover from the current economic downturn. Only the most highly efficient panels with the best prices and best warranties will be purchased. Smaller Chinese companies are probably the most at risk. Balance sheets for all solar companies will be off for the next few quarters as reduced demand from the recession and cyclical seasonal patterns works its way off balance sheets.

In addition to Germany, the U.S. considered the sleeping giant of the solar industry is also doing much to ensure a robust solar rebound. Here?s a snapshot of what the U.S. recent stimulus did for the solar industry: Investors are now able to take a 30% federal refund on the value of a new installation before deducting any state incentives. So a theoretical $100.00 dollar solar system in North Carolina (35% state credit) now only costs the investor $35.00-because both federal and state incentives are now calculated from the full price. Best part is, those federal incentives have no cap and the project need only be finished by 2017 to qualify. This incentive alone will rapidly increase solar demand as homeowners and investors a like rush to get discounts on solar installations on the taxpayers? dime. But there are many more solar provisions in the stimulus that will only magnify the gains that can be taken on the right solar stocks. There?s also $6 billion dedicated to paying the fees on guaranteed loans. This clause is aimed at encouraging banks to make loans for renewable projects. Most estimates say that $6 billion in guarantees will translate into $60 in new loans.
